Two people have died and others have been left seriously injured after crashes on State Highway 1 (SH1) and State Highway 3 this afternoon.

Police announced that one person died after a two-vehicle crash in Whanganui.

“The two-vehicle crash occurred on SH3 between Maxwell Station Road and Pukerimu Road shortly after 1.30pm,” police said.

Motorists are advised to follow diversions and expect delays.

Meanwhile, one person has died in a Waipu crash at the intersection of SH1 and Shoemaker Rd around 1.55pm.

Four other people received injuries ranging from serious to minor and have been transported to hospital.

Police said a scene examination had been completed, but drivers should expect delays.

A third crash south of Taihape saw a section of SH1 closed for a time and people left seriously injured.

The accident happened around 3.40pm about five kilometres south of Taihape.

The accidents come as many Kiwis head away for the Labour Day long weekend.
