Part of the northbound lane of Auckland’s Southern Motorway is closed following a “serious crash” just before 10am today.

Waka Kotahi NZTA posted on X, formerly Twitter, that all northbound lanes have been closed between Papakura and Takanini, though southbound lanes remain open.

“Please avoid this route or expect delays and diversions (via Great South Rd) for all northbound traffic,” the agency wrote.

Police told 1News emergency services were responding to an incident involving three vehicles at around 9.40am on SH1 near Takanini.

In a statement, a spokesperson said early indications suggested one person received critical injuries.

“The serious crash unit has been advised,” the statement read.

“Motorists are asked to defer their travel or expect delays.

“As the situation is still unfolding, police will provide an update once we are in a position to do so.”
